You know how you hate to do last minute back-to-school shopping!

You don't like having to wade through the crowds, sifting through poor, then poorer selections of clothes, book bags, book supplies, etc.. You look at the big red SALE sign with disdain as the clerk rings up your 3 ring binders at what you know is full price. You breath heavily and exhale a sigh of resignation - it's late, stock is depleted and your child's school starts in a just a few days. With another breath, you try to let go of some of the tension of having too much to do in too little time. You vow not to be here next year!
Too often we get similiar results when we wait to prepare our children for the upcoming school year's academic and social challenges. Waiting 'til the last minute to get our children in an academic frame of mind leads to a slower start in class. Our children have only one chance to make a good "first impression." Instead of showing their readiness, they are mired in the crowd of the others who wait 'til the academic race begins before they start to get into condition. Being unprepared for the academic challenges causes stress that they sometimes mask with silence, compliance or false bravado. This often shapes the teacher's image and impression of them.
It's an impression that often takes months to replace. In the meantime, teachers' low expectations influence your child's expectations for themselves. Some never recover from the initial negative image. Just like that high-priced 3-ring binder purchased at the last minute -  the cost is just too high.

Because we were once children too, we know that summer is NOT over! We've designed our courses and schedule to allow students to have plenty of time for continued fun, while you get the peace of mind that comes with their being  prepared.

Kinematics-2-Kmt: is a great example. Students have to engage in some summer athletic activity (running, swimming, speed walking, weight lifting, etc.) throughout the entire course while they also learn and apply introductory physics, khemisty and the science of melanin to their physical activity!  Want more? Image-A-Nation Photography class, another example of our combing summer fun with real academic preparation. Students with even the most inexpensive digital cameras are challenged to be out in the environment to photograph- truth, justice, harmony and the other principles of MAAT. Baba John Henrik Clarke said that "oppression robs you of your imagination." He also admonished us to develop a nation concept as a foundation of our educational practice.  We help students restore their imagination as they also picture us a nation within a nation comitted to academic and social excellence. Math and Language arts are stimualted and reinforced. With all of that, do they learn photography? Well, one of our graduates is representin' in Washington DC this week at the national ACT-SO competition! (see her photos here) Parents can enroll with their children at no additional cost!

Because it's summer,  the courses have to be even more engaging. That why our Sankofa Word and Sankofa Math classes start the students off as family detectives and researchers exploring, for example, their grandparent's greatest life lessons, then doing "flash-backs" to let us see how they learned them.
