Advanced English Composition

Day - School Only:

8:45-10:15 AM

Tuesday and Thursdays

• Writing with Power

• Writing Under Pressure

• Writing for Pleasure

The first step in writing a good research paper is identity.

      • From what location are the questions poised and to what end?

The second step is actually doing the research.

      • Where and how can you collect reliable data?

We also contrast how culture and oppression define who or what is "competent and legitimate authority."

AYA's Advanced English Composition course introduces students to valuable research sources and techniques, while also providing writing instruction for a range of non-fiction formats. We seek to include ways to document sources typically overlooked in Eurocentric guided research.

In addition to new methods for gathering information and tips on the use of electronic sources, students will also get expert advice on crafting:

• Essays • Abstracts • Arguments • Technical papers • Business papers

Featuring interviews with published authors, a simulated newscast / talk show, and a friendly, informative African-centered teaching style, this second level English course will show you the best and easiest ways to find your facts, organize them and express them.

The class meets twice a week. Lab time with your classmates in our exclusive online space is required.

Together, you'll learn how to research and to use your pen or keyboard to shape ideas and opinions that will improve our world.

Grammar?

Well, we still emphasize it in Advanced Composition.

We just use our Afrikan cultural strengths to do it. Here's a question that gives you some clue to how we do it.

Question 1: If "movement" and "essence" or "realness" are high cultural values, how can we use these to guide our learning  grammar rules and how English grammar works?

Question 2: If “function” before form” is a key cultural value of our people, how can we use that to accelerate our becoming proficient at English Grammar?

Question 3: Could it be that contrasting English grammar with the grammar of an Afrikan Language grammar of say - Twi would enhance understanding of English grammar?

It's in there..... That's it, now you're thinking in the AYA way.

Join us to find out just how we use our African cultural strengths to make grammar fun and relevant.
